As the beautiful autumn leaves fall, we begin to see the calm and cozy winter take its place. The days are getting shorter and snuggling up next to the fireplace with a warm cup of hot cocoa is all that we crave. This is fitting, considering one of the December birthstones is turquoise, which is thought to have calming powers and balance emotions.

People have been fascinated with the turquoise for thousands of years, dating back to 3100 B.C.E. The earliest known findings come from ancient Egyptian tombstones that contain marvelous turquoise jewelry pieces. The Sinai Peninsula area of Egypt is credited with housing the oldest turquoise mines. The Egyptians called the turquoise they found “mefkat”, which meant “joy” and “delight”.  In Ancient Persia, they decorated exhaustively with this stone and often engraved it with Arabic script.

This stone is admired for its unmistakable color that can range anywhere from deep sky blue to

pale light blue, appearing almost green in color. Due to its sky-blue color, oftentimes palaces and domes would be covered in the turquoise stone, representing the heavens.

The gemstone turquoise is truly fascinating in regards to how it gets its vibrant color. Found in dry regions, this stone is formed when rainwater dissolves copper into the soil. This copper forms nodular deposits when it touches with the elements phosphorus and aluminum. Put simply, when these elements react, they form beautiful shades of blue, while chrome and iron give the stone a whisper of green.

From its origins, turquoise has been praised for its enchanting color and undeniable charm. It’s symbolic for a wide range of reasons ranging from lovely jewelry gifts to creating ceremonial weapons. This stone is indeed a timeless classic, bringing us peace and harmony during the sometimes hectic month of December. Visit us at S. Lennon Jewelers, located at 23 Genesee St. to shop our amazing collection of turquoise jewelry.
